Actually, most eating knives I'm experienced with have a rounded tip that would be hard to puncture skin. And, the last time I checked, pencils also have points and can puncture skin. So outlaw them to? I will agree there is a big difference between somebody walking in with a 12 inch bowie. And if the school even wants these eating tools to be out, fine.
