I just recycled some dvd drives for a same age computer as yours I gave to
my daughter with win7 ultimate on it and she is playing her games as well as
watching dvd's since I have it hooked upto the tv. I didn't use the advisor
to check anything and its running on an nvidia agp card. I don't know what
the model/chipset is but it hasn't given me any problems. I haven't heard
of pixel shader 2 but she isn't into some of the high end graphic games, she
is just using it for simple grade school games. Plays dvd movies fine
though.

Subject: Question for weekend hardware geeks.

I have a five or six year old desktop computer.

I would like to update the graphic card in advance of upgrading from XP pro
to Win 7 on this box. As well as letting my son play his Spore on the
desktop instead of my Laptop. The MS Win 7 Adviser tool indicates that is
the only thing lacking on this system, beyond needing a simple re-partition
of my hard drive to provide enough space on my C drive for the OS.

The current graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X.
Apparently I need to upgrade to something with pixel shader 2 for both the
game and the Windows upgrade.

What do I need to be aware of, when I am shopping for a new card? Any
suggestions on a good, but affordable card?

While I'm at it, I apparently need to replace the failed DVD drive. Any
concerns on incompatibility for basic DVD drives?
