Been there and done that by myself and others and finding replacements is tough too. I've been through a lot of employees in the last few years who lack work ethic.. they have it for the interview and first two weeks and for somereason its like they put on their second face..

Personally, I think that's a people problem, not a technology problem. Less draconian measures will show the employees more respect. If the expectation is clearly communicated that they are expected to be at work, and they are not, that's definitely worth discussing with them one-on-one. If an employee cannot meet clearly communicated expectations, then that employee needs to be notified of their failures and be told how to correct them. If they continue to not meet expectations then they should be replaced with someone who can.
