In Belichick we trust. I don't think he did it unthinkingly.
I think he believed it was his best move at the time. I think it is possible that he overthought, and made one more "smart move" than he needed to to outmaneuver the Colts. But more likely, I think he looked at the odds, and felt the best move, with everything he knew, including game situation, momentum, injuries, and the capabilities of his team and the other team, he made the best move he had available. Without the bobble, it was a good decision. Right players, right play. It should have worked. But a great hit by the defense made it all moot.
