I'm still going for the cynic route. They are offering the new plan
because Verizon is dropping their rates and they want to get as many
people on AT&T on the iPhone before the exclusive deal drops in June.
And since they are doing it for new customers, they have to do it for
existing customers as well or else there would be hell to pay from
existing customers.

If June rolled around and Verizon offered both the Droid and the
iPhone and their unlimited plans were $30 a month cheaper? That's
pretty much game over for AT&T. They have to hold on to what they
have.
