Hhm, that battery life number I gave was probably a bit low for average use....to be honest, I am usually hooked to power so just don't pay attention to it that much. I do tend to be playing music and often watching online video, using up battery power pretty fast, so YMMV.
One thing I do like with mine (and the Asus I mentioned) is that they are a bit larger than the average netbook. I personally could not deal with the really small 9" ones. It really makes all the difference in the world having a keyboard that is close to normal size. Depends on the daughter's age how much of an issue that would be...not that kids these days learn correct typing skills!
