I guess it depends on the situation. Are you happy with your current
position? Are they happy with you. 

If your current situation is good, I'd offer any help, advice etc, that you
could, they may even make a counter offer to keep you. 

On the other hand, if you're not happy, or they're not happy and neither is
willing to do anything about it, then cut and run may be in order. 

Having said that, follow protocol, two weeks notice, don't speak ill of your
former employer to the new employer, make sure that the old employer knows
that it's not legal for them to speak ill of you to any prospective
employer.
