I had this discussion ages ago with someone...forget whom. I argued that pouring boiling water onto oats didn't exactly cook them as well as following the directions on the packet. Someone else said it was just as good.
I just bought some packets of Instant Cream of **Wheat** (different to instant oats). On these packages the directions say that you can pour just-boiling water over the instant wheat to prepare it for eating.
