Check out Tiger Direct or New Egg...you can usually start out with a bare bones system and add parts as needed. I have saved a lot of money that way and have been able to put together some killer systems. They also have prebuilt systems you can buy.
I put together a similar system (same processor...8 gig of ram, nVidia BFG GeForce 285 OC 2gig, 750gig sata drive, dvd-rw, case, PS, ASUS mobo, 22" Viewsonic monitor that is compatible with the nVidia 3dVision) for 1500.00. The additional cost for me was the video card and monitor (about 700). Compared to this, I probably saved 200 over the HP system if I would have similarly speced it out...which is the cost of the OS for me (I put Ultimate on this box from an OEM copy) I am also not a big fan of prebuilt systems. I am definitely a build it myself kinda guy.
