This is what my wife says "Cats are an animal that will not show you
they are in pain until they just cant hide it any longer. A cat that
has been hit by a car will purr when you pick it up even if they are
missing limbs. Food is something that will be the very last thing a
cat will enjoy. If you can deal with the litter box accidents, then
perhaps you should wait until your cat no longer shows enjoyment in
food.
Try a bigger litter box, one that is low to the ground and not
covered. Try putting puppy pads under the box all around the sides so
if your kitty has accidents its on the pads and not your floor?"
