You can get it for a variety of ailments. Before you make fun of it,
consider that marijuana is non-toxic and has been responsible for zero
deaths in clinical trials across many years and many studies, while
even common household painkillers like Tylenol can and do kill people
on occasion. My partner (a PhD biochemist) points out that the first
rule of medicine is to do no harm, and that the first rule of drug
discovery is to find something that doesn't kill the patient.

I will be sharing a lot more information about this stuff over the
coming months, as I am involved in her newly founded institute, The
Medicinal Research Institute (www.medicinalresearch.org), which has a
mission to study natural medicinal products and transform them into
modern medicines, starting with (but not limited to) medicinal
marijuana.

There is a clear and growing body of scientific evidence that active
compounds in marijuana are effective at treating a variety of ailments
and conditions. There are more than 60 biologically active compounds
in cannabis, some with anti-fungal activity, anti-malarial activity,
anti-cancer (I use that term loosely as a non-scientist) activity, and
much, much more. The science is finally catching up to what people
have known for years. The American Medical Association has overturned
a decades-long policy of supporting marijuana prohibition, recognizing
the scientific legitimacy of medical marijuana and calling on the
federal government to take marijuana off the Schedule 1 drug list and
promoting more research on the subject.

The times they are a changin'.
