Actually its very easy. Body armour is not perfect and does not
protect completely. For instance there's this incident in Afghanistan
4 years ago:
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20060303/afghan_canada_bomb_060304/20060305/

To quote:
--Canadian soldiers saw a routine tribal meeting in Afghanistan turn
into an ambush, with one officer critically wounded by an axe-wielding
assailant.

"The guy lifted up the axe, and called out Allah Akbar, the jihad
prayer, before they do suicides, and he swung the axe into Trevor's
head," Capt. Kevin Schamuhn, the platoon commander, told CTV News on
Saturday (an audio account of the incident by Schamuhn is available in
the video section at right).

A metal bar can still crush bone. A knife can still stab. A metal ball
propelled by a slingshot can still kill.
