I built my first Web app in 1995 in Perl, and man was that ever painful. Writing a single small app in Perl was a major undertaking. Later that year, I got CF 1.5, shipped on two 3.5" disks, and it was so cool I couldn't believe it. Even though CF had very few capabilities at the time, it was light years ahead of everything else. I subsequently did some ASP work (VBScript was not so bad, really), and have learned different languages to varying degrees over the years, but CF has remained my favorite language to use. Whenever I think it's a PITA, I do something in Java and that reminds me quickly just how cool CF really is. A quick story, I was working with a Java guy at a former job. His team was building a search app in Java and he wanted to see what we had built in CF (using Google Appliances and then FAST as the search engine). He wanted to see something changed on my dev site, so I pulled up some code, changed it in less than a minute, and showed him the update. He just blinked and then burst out, "Now I see why you like CF so much!" Well duh, smart guy. Would I do things differently? No way. You don't make really big money writing applications unless you are the owner of the application, and if you are the owner you can use whatever you want. I've never had particular trouble finding work, even in a town like San Diego which is pretty much pwned by Microsoft and Java. If anything, at this point I would focus on Flex/AS/Javascript if I wanted to retain my skills and move into an area that is wide open and has tremendous growth potential. In fact, that's pretty much what I'm doing, though I still do lots and lots of CF and don't expect that to change. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology-Michael-Dinowitz/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-community/message.cfm/messageid:320354 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-community/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-community/unsubscribe.cfm
