Even if he is tried for treason, since we are not at war, he probably won't
be executed. He will probably spend the rest of his life at Fort
Leavenworth in Kansas.

Military arrested

Its a lot more than that:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/07/AR2010060702
381.html?sub=AR
"Lamo said Manning felt mistreated by the military and wanted the Army
to see "the futility" of its computer-security measures. He told Lamo
how he once walked out of a classified document room at Forward
Operating Base Hammer with data that he had copied onto a CD labeled
as Lady Gaga music."

And a bit further on:
"He was upset at the Army and Army policies, as well as with U.S.
foreign policy, Lamo said."

So it would seem that the guy wsa not just a whistleblower but had a
political agenda.

That said, he also violated security laws while in an active combat
zone. He potentially could have been responsible for the deaths of a
lot of American and Iraqi personnel. He'll be lucky if he isn't tried
for treason and executed.
