not really. think of it as a form of conditioning. the kid starts
associating a very positive reinforcement with the happy meal.
McDonald's then starts colonizing the future - they become more
assured of future customers.

There's the reinforcement relief. Parents are more likely to buy a
happy meal in the future if it stops the kid from punishing them by
having temper tantrums, crying, screaming etc. Again the result is
more profits for McDonald's.

Sounds like a crock maybe but I seen this happen enough with some
fairly simple demonstrations of shaping behavior. And the person is
never aware of it happening. And that's doing something quite
innocuous.

Now McDonald's has some of the best child psychology researchers
around who spend most of their time designing this sort of thing.hell
some of them have pioneered these techniques.

Another point to consider the study CSPI is referring to found a very
strong relationship between how often the kids get happy meals and
childhood obesity. As afar as I can see any way of preventing fat kids
is a good thing. That is of course one wants to pay for all the health
complications in the future.
