There is a succession of command and under normal circumstances there would
be someone to temporarily replace McCrystal. However, these are unusual
circumstances. McCrystals staff were mainly the ones who were doing the shit
talking (and by that I mean they were conveying some of the things he was
saying, so one could logically assume that McCrystals second in command may
be looking for another job as well. Petraus is a competent leader, and has
has a competent commander in Iraq, so he can easily manage the war in
Afghanistan. Also, Petraus is the CENTCOM commander which means he was
McCrystals boss as well as the boss of the ground commander in Iraq, so I am
sure that he is well versed in the diferences and requirements of both wars.
