Or, some people actually like that the phone is locked, like myself. I also
happen to like that OSX can't be installed on commodity hardware. I use OSX
to get things done and I can count on it working correctly on the hardware
it's installed on. Same goes with my iPhone. I like the fact that iOS can
only run on Apple products. Android works on a bunch of different hardware
and although I haven't tried many Android phone, the disparity in hardware
means you're not going to get the same experience on each phone. Likewise,
with the App store. I kinda like the fact that someone is policing the apps
that I can install. When my wife, who installs new games at the drop of
the hat installs an app, I can feel relatively comfortable that it won't
crash her system. I can feel relatively comfortable that it will not be
malware. If anything, I wish it would be a little more thorough. I
recently saw an app on her phone...a flashlight app, all it does is make the
screen bright. It clocks in at 1.4mb. Meanwhile, another app that actually
does real stuff clocked in at only 160K. You know the flashlight app was
made by someone who really didn't know what they were doing and probably
included every library in the book.

I still love my linux, and use it everyday. I use it on my desktop at work
and all of my servers. I keep my macbook around because nobody touches the
ease of use of Apple products like iMovie, iPhoto, or Snow Leopard in
general. I use an iPhone for the same reasons. I enjoy the feature set it
has. It's just about perfect for what I want and not bloated. I love the
fact that I last charged it on my drive home of Friday and still have 40%
charge left this morning after using it all morning as an mp3 player while
mowing the lawn. I love the fact that since it doesn't have an external
battery, my past iPhones haven't busted the battery cover when accidentally
dropped (like my Windows phones use to). I love the screen because reading
on it has finally become enjoyable. I love the fact the the iPhone 4G has
the same connector as my iPhone 3G, iPod 3rd Gen and classic have because I
haven't had to buy all new accessories each time I've upgraded.

I've had a lot of different phones in the past, ranging from a Samsung
clamshell in 97, to a Kyocera Palm based phone, to several incarnations of
Windows Mobile phones. I've stayed with iPhones since switching to it the
day the 3G came out. I can't see me switching anytime soon. I'm not going
to say the the Android phones are bad. I've only played with them when
friends have brought them. What I will say though is that with all my other
phones, I've been left with an itch to scratch. I haven't noticed that at
all with the iPhone.
