I use a combination of: 1. Google Search of the exact area i.e. "hotels loc:somewhere" or whatever the search string is that shows ALL the nearby places to stay
2. Priceline just to see what standard discount rates are for the big places. 3. Travelocity because their searches include more, and I can filter at will. Armed with the average decent discounted rate for the place I am looking for ... I then call the actual hotel (get number from Google search) and ask them for availability and rates. If they quote the same or lower than I've already researched, then fine. I book it directly with them. If they quote higher, I tell them "But MrDiscountSite has you for X amount a night. Can you match it?" 9 times out of ten, they match it. Now, you probably wonder, if it's the same rate as the discount sites, why not book thru the discount site? Because - the rates they show don't always include the discount site's fees. **AND** - this is a big one if you use them - if you book thru a discount site, you cannot claim any member rewards. i.e. Marriott rewards, Hilton Head Honors, etc. So there you go. Yeah, a little more work than point and click, done ... but there's quite a fluctuation in rates sometimes, depending on hotel and area. So it can be well worth it.
