"Doesn't seem to really matter, honestly. It isn't like they were able to
wrangle 60 votes for a quick, non-negotiable party-line vote. Ever."

Thank God. An encouraging sign. Lock step voting by party (any party) by
representatives from such a large country with so many regional differences
would be a dangerous thing. It would show partisanship over representing
constituents.

"I'm in favor of abolishing the fillibuster for votes on anything other than
lifetime positions. "

I'm in favor of actually making the people filibuster. Instead of accepting
the line "we're going to filibuster", make them step up to the mike and go
through with it. I said it when the Democrats were threatening the judicial
nominations of Bush and I said recently over health care.

"Make the people we hire for these positions actually do something. The
Senate is horridly dysfunctional."

We can agree on that. The addition of Al Franken didn't help anything.

"Once upon a time, I was in favor of a 'do nothing' government.
Unfortunately, I've learned since then that there is never a government that
just lets the status quo be and gives us time to breathe. Our best hope is
that we enable a government that can actually do things at all levels and
then actively pursue the regulation and focus on said government."

Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms those entrusted with
power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny -
