I tend to look at this on a case by case basis. Some gigs really
require a tight knit team that communicates uber-frequently, and in a
more personally direct way than technology can allow. Other projects
can easily be done remotely.

It's never an all or nothing thing. Every job is not a good fit for
telecommuting and I'd say every person is not right for telecommuting
either.

Seeing a contractor sitting in a cube struggling with a problem,
walking by and saying "you're missing that semicolin" might save the
person an hour of time. That same person might never reach out for
help when working alone at home. That same person might then help the
guy next to him figure out a strange CSS problem. Multiply that by a
team of 10 with 20 such interactions a day each and onsite teams
become pretty attractive.

Yes the same thing can happen online via IM, email, or even Skype
though slower, and with less frequency.

I think telecommuting works best for lone rock stars with exceptional
capacity to debug, learn, and stay focused. The more you add to the
team (and the more varied their skillsets are) the more it makes sense
to have people onsite.

I guess you could say that it's a csae of "the whole is greater then
the sum of it's parts". Telecommuting is the sum of it's parts,
onsite is the whole (sorta).
