Wal-mart lives by their motto: always low prices always.

They don't set out to dick people around. They set out to lower prices.
They are so cost conscious that their offices are furnished with floor
samples and returns.

Sometimes in their quest to lower prices, bad things happen. Some
businesses do go under, some quality does suffer because they do ask
manufacturers to cut cost and businesses are so concerned with keeping in
the Wal-mart chain that they comply.

Sometimes people benefit as well. Consumers get low prices, new jobs and
businesses are created around the Wal-mart.

Sometimes there are bizarre consequence like saving trees. Years ago,
Wal-mart pushed for deodorant to ship without a box. Eventually, the makers
of deodorant complied, thus saving Wal-mart and consumers a few cents on
every purchase. Since no box was needed, many tree were saved. However,
the demand for cardboard decreased which probably cost a lot of people their
jobs.

Also, some people tell Wal-mart "No". Snapper refused to lower their cost
anymore since they thought quality would suffer. They stopped selling to
Wal-mart.

Again, I highly recommend "The Wal-mart Effect". The author is not a hack
for Wal-mart. He does an admirable job of trying to stay neutral. In the
end, he sways slightly to the anti Wal-mart side but not too far.
