The USPTO has once again shown either its corrupt nature or incompetence by granting Facebook a patent covering Location aware networks and Check Ins.
OF course it doesn't matter that Foursquare, Gowalla and even Yahoo have prior work in this. It can be used to effectively stifle innovation and competition simply by the threat of a lawsuit. A young company is not going to have the millions to either challenge or defend against Facebook.
