I would assume that the parent's would have the decency to clarify
with my wife or myself if it was OK. If not, then I or my wife would
have a conversation with the parents about it.

My mother and my wife's parents have enough respect for us and our
wishes that if we asked them not to take the kids to McDonalds they
wouldn't. If they did, I or my wife would have a conversation with
them about it.

Not rose colored glasses, I trust my kids..to a point. I remember
what I did as a kid to 'get one over' on my parents, which is why when
we say 'no' we make sure to follow through with consequences if they
do not listen. We are fortunate that our kids are usually very well
behaved, and with the rare exception listen when we say 'no'.

For the record, we do take our kids to McDonalds from time to time.
But if we said 'yes' every time they asked, we would be there every
day...sometimes twice a day. So, you see, saying 'no' really is that
easy and effective.
