Well do you have access to any software like ontrack easy recovery or
anything? If the drive stays powered up fine and you just have CRC errors a
piece of software will usually work around these and copy what data it can
off the drive. I can give you names of the 5 pieces of software I have for
file recovery, ontrack being one of them, but I usually try to run 2 of them
since the look for similar but slightly different things. You can also
download the trial versions, the problem is they will tell you what you can
recover but without purchasing it won't save anything which may be fine but
the more the drive is turned on, the more the crc errors may grow depending
on whats wrong on the inside. Sorry this type of thing is the other hat I
have to wear.

Subject: hard drive help

Sit back and hear a tale of woe. If, after hiding in shared terror, crying
in sympathy, or laughing your ass off, you have a solution to my dilemma,
please let me know.

It started one not so dark nor stormy night. I decided to transfer a ton of
code from one of my websites to a local drive. Using an FTP program, the
task started without a problem. The local drive, a second drive in my
development machine (lets call it M:), seemed to be accepting the data. But
suddenly it all went directly to hell.
The drive I was copying the data to froze. This caused an error message to
display every few seconds that data was lost. The only thing possible was to
turn off the machine and pray that a reboot would help. It didn't.
All attempts at correcting the problem has failed. One attempt, using
chkdsk aborted with the message:
"Unable to read the Usn journal $J data stream".
Attempts to find a solution to this error resulted in a suggestion to delete
the Usn journal. I attempted to do so on the drive. The result was the
message:
"Error: Data error (cyclic redundancy error)"

So how screwed am I and is there any path back?

Thanks
