Or the players of that nationality. You don't have to play for a team in
that country to qualify.

As an aside, there have been many cases where players qualify to play for a
country in a dubious nature, like a great grandmother or something, and
similarly where players are able to choose from a number of countries. One
of Roy Keane's (Republic of Ireland captain and Man Utd captain) main
complaints in his falling out with the team coach was that too many of the
other players in the national side were English.

It's the largest sporting event on the planet, yes bigger than the olympics
in terms of the number of poeple who watch it. You have to remember that
football (soccer) is the number 1 sport in most countries on the planet.

It's very proffesional, top players get a LOT of money, several million
pounds a year in some cases.

The teams are chosen by the national coach/manager from all the players
avaialble in their respective countries.

Craig.

Central America and South America who probably know the answer, I have a
question about the World Cup. Is this a professional or amateur sports
championship? If it is professional, how are the national teams chosen?
