Go beyond the stifling confines of the 8 hour day. Why do we congregate in
offices? The majority of the work we do today is knowledge work and does not
rely on in person interaction. It made sense back in the day when most work
was done on paper and the paper had to be passed around, but now virtually
everything is electronic. So why are we still gathering in caves (cubicle
farms) to pass around a bunch of bits? Remember back in the day when Larry
Ellison asked why we sold software on disks in physical boxes? That model
has all but disappeared.

Lots of people will give you BS reasons about water cooler talk and
camaraderie. I say it's just old school command and control refusing to die.
Sure, telecommuting is on the rise, but it's still a fraction of the
workforce. Why? The gasoline savings alone are staggering. Quality of life
would increase, air quality would improve, commuting traffic would become a
thing of the past. Families could spend more time together.

The money is leaking out of the country as globalization accelerates. Moving
to a largely office-free economy would save trillions and allow businesses
to compete more effectively in the future. More importantly, making
telecommuting the standard for work would give average Americans something
they haven't had in a long time - a concrete improvement in their lives.
