It is why our country is not a democracy, but a democratic republic. Each district can elect someone who believes in their ideals. Unfortunately, after being in DC for 20 years, politicians don't seem to give a damn about their constituents. See the health care deform vote. Overwhelmingly unpopular, yet representative after representative voted for it, constituents be damned. "So it's hard for them to have a high national approval rating. The best example of this is Nancy Pelosi, who consistently gets low national ratings, but was reelected by 80% because the voters in her district like what she is doing." Like has been noted before, the politicians on the extreme ends are usually safe, many times due to gerrymandered districts. The closer to the middle you are, the more vulnerable you are.
