You know, coming from a person who reads a lot of this list without getting
involved in the discussion very often, I can say that Sam didn't start off
as abrasive as he is now.   His views have always been opposite that of the
majority of the list but when he started posting, I would say he was more
often then not the, the one being greeted by absurd rudeness.  Early on,
between Dana and Larry (and less so, a few others at the time), anything Sam
said was met with vitriol that is only tolerated by a group of like minded
folks.

That being said, over the years Sam has become a characterture of exactly
what he was accused of being.  From my observation it seems that he simply
stopped trying to talk and started trying to win, irritate and I'm not
exactly sure what else.  Don't take this to mean that I agree with what he
says or how he says it, but just that his current posting style is as much a
result of the list's mob mentality at the time of his joining as it is to
his behavior at that time.
