I did a creative workshop with Mike Reid a few years ago. He told the story of writing that song. He overheard some redneck say to his girlfriend who was trashing him "I can't make you love me if you don't". It originally had a bluegrass melody until he wrote the line "don't compromise", which he figured was too citified for a bluegrass song. Also, that beautiful ending chord where the one chord drops down to the seven was a accident because he transposed the song up one step in his composition program and didn't drag the cursor all the way to the end, missing the last note. I could use some accidents like that.
