It's quite well documented that from Day 1 Bill's plan was to copy
other people's IP.  He just happens to have been extraordinarily lucky
that he found a hit with dos, windows, and office.

IBM went through much the same thing and they were able to make the
switch to services.

Google may also be experiencing this as search and browser-based ads
become middle-aged.
