It was "Demonic" by Ann Coulter. Nah. Just kidding.
The book was actually "Waking Giant: America in the Age of Jackson" by David Reynolds. It is basically a history book covering the US from the end of the War of 1812 to 1848. The book covers many aspects of American life during the first half of the 19th century. There is a lot on the three sides of the slavery issue: The abolitionists versus the slavery proponents versus the racist anti-slavery crowd. The last were against slavery but believed that Blacks were inferior to Whites. It was a much larger group than the abolitionists and contained people like Lincoln. The book also discussed the treatment of Native Americans. There was a lot on the expansion west (particularly the conflict regarding the annexation of Texas), conflict with Mexico, the relationship with England (specifically over disputed lands and slavery), the birth of a truly American style of writing, poetry, and art instead of Eurocentric styles. There is a lot on the creation of true two party political system (Whigs versus Democrats) and the struggle between congress and the administration. Each was trying to assert authority over the other. The nation was moving from an agriculture economy to and industrial economy. Labor unions were fighting for a 10 hour work day. Many other things were covered like religion, science, and so on. It behooves you, therefore, to be watchful in your States as well as in the Federal Government. - Andrew Jackson ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-community/message.cfm/messageid:338999 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-community/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-community/unsubscribe.cfm
