The US spend more on defense than the rest of the world's governments combined by a factor of 2 or 3 times.
Also a very simple suggestion would be to go back to the Ronald Reagan era tax rates. Eliminate the Bush era tax cuts. Just eliminating the tax cuts alone would go a long way to defusing this crisis.
