I keep all my mail (well important stuff anyway), and try to keep everything
filed away. Keeping my inbox empty, but I've got probably at least 40
folders for different messages and older mail in archive PSTs. I've used
outlook since - 97 maybe?

After deleting a bunch of mail from a pst you can compress it. Tools.
Service. select PST. Properties. Compact Now.

My sent folder had a lot of mail in it and OE started to crawl...as soon as
I cleared it out it was fine again.

You may want to try Eudora...it's pretty good and it's free if you can
tolerate the banners...
