It probably has nothing to do with the topic at hand but since it's related, I'll mention that whether or not you "own" or "lease" a domain depends, it seems, on the terms you agree to with your Registrar.
One of the reasons I originally went with Gandi.net (based in France) is that they explicitly say that you own your domain and they are providing services to you. Other registrars wording...not so much.
