I got that from a guy I worked with who was/is from former east Germany. He used to remind me that the first country the Nazis invaded was Germany and described how it started with giving the state power to go after enemies of the state without any process. Within three years the government was abducting people's families, and a few years after that burning them up in ovens. That's hilarious!
