Something cool I just noticed yesterday on GMail's web interface... Next to any label you can click the little menu arrow and choose to show only show the label if new unread messages exist in the label. I have about 50 labels for various mailing lists. Some only get a message or two every month. This is a great way to hide those till a message comes to them. Previously I just hid the entire label, which meant I rarely even looked at it anymore.
Keeps my sidebar uncluttered without my labels all getting hidden forever.
