I think the mind-boggling is more nuanced:

(1.) The awesome thing about America that 2008 proved is that anyone can be 
President.  We don't discriminate for race or gender.

(2.) The horrific thing about America is that we've proven to fear one thing 
over all others: inconvenience.  Americans just seem to be unwilling to 
compromise on current-self even if it's better for future self.  And we've 
become deluded into thinking each one us has the right answers to the exclusion 
of all other points of view.

(3.) Our aspirational leaders have created an unsustainable management system 
based on this core dysfunction.  When faced with our own collective failures we 
become even MORE exclusive, rather than inclusive of other viewpoints and 
opinions.

Right now we're like the flight crew that pulled back the yoke, stalled the 
airplane, is plummeting towards the ground, but keeps pulling more into the 
stall.

If we don't come to terms with the fact that individually we have the wrong 
answers but collectively we have the right ones, we're gonna eat high speed 
dirt.
