the thing about the US debt problem is that part of the solution would
be to eliminate the shrub tax cuts. Or at the very least go back to
Ronnie Raygun's tax structure. By eliminating the tax cuts that would
recover almost a trillion over the next decade. Almost enough to pay
for Bush's adventurism while in office. Another potential helper would
be to progressive reduce the military budget by 30% over the next
decade. Given that the US spends almost double on the military than
the next 6 big spenders combined, I don't think it would really hurt
our defensive capacities.

The strange part of it is that the tax burden has been the lowest
since the Great Depression. And in comparison to all other G-7
countries, the US citizen pays the least in taxes and gets far more
for what they do pay.Updating the tax system would go a long way
towards eliminating the debt.
