Yet he was one of the chief sponsors of the Defense of Marriage Act.
And he's been trying to get even more restrictions in place. Recently
he sponsored the Marriage Protection Act which would forbid the courts
from hearing any cases challenging the DOMA or MPA.

So how is this stating that the "govt shouldnt be involved in deciding
who can/cant be married." Rather it seems to be the opposite.

As I said THOMAS is very useful in this regard.
