It's just... astonishing to me that the United States has reached the point where people not only don't speak another language, it's considered a strike against them when they learn kindergarten phrases. That's leaving aside the hypocrisy of attacking on this basis when you demonstrably can navigate the language at the doctoral level. Oh and it's also ignoring the sheer ignorance of revisiting the whole Freedom Fries thing lo these many years later when the France's reservations on Iraq have pretty much been vindicated.
