This is a really cool research project. Scientists started out with
single celled yeast and decided to look into whether selective
pressure could evolve multi-cell organisms under lab conditions. They
took a really simple approach, simply selecting yeast that settled to
the bottom of a perturbed solution (which tend to be heavier or
clumped cells) to seed the subsequent generation. After only 60 days
(generations), they found strains that were dominated by evolved cell
clusters. A bunch of other fascinating behavior observed too.
