This is a really cool research project. Scientists started out with single celled yeast and decided to look into whether selective pressure could evolve multi-cell organisms under lab conditions. They took a really simple approach, simply selecting yeast that settled to the bottom of a perturbed solution (which tend to be heavier or clumped cells) to seed the subsequent generation. After only 60 days (generations), they found strains that were dominated by evolved cell clusters. A bunch of other fascinating behavior observed too.
