My sis was working for the Associated Press when Challenger exploded. She said jokes about it were coming down the AP Wire before the debris stopped falling.
Sometimes laughter really is the best medicine. My favorite moment from Dan's memorial was when his best friend of many years said "that man could complicate a peanut butter sandwich". It was so funny and so true, and the laughter helped us all.
