My brother-in-law's father was in the US Embassy service for over 40 years - France, Mexico, Italy, and numerous other postings. His job was to do the actual work of an Ambassador as the person in the job was almost always just a figurehead. The BIL basically grew up in these embassies. The stories he tells will curl your hair.
