AKA dependance on social welfare as a way of life.

"Amanda Clayton hit it big playing the Michigan Lottery. Like many
winners, she used her $1 million prize to buy a new house."

(reasonable)

"But the Lincoln Park, Michigan, resident continued to receive money in
another form -- $200 a month in state food assistance"

(um ....)

'"I thought that they would cut me off, but since they didn't, I
thought, maybe, it was OK because I'm not working," Clayton, 24, told
WDIV when it asked whether it was appropriate for her to receive the money.'

(ignorance is problem #1)

'Asked if she had the right to the public assistance money, Clayton
answered, "I kind of do. I have no income, and I have bills to pay. I
have two houses."'

(the perception of *needing* the welfare to survive is problem #2)

If she took that $500,000 and put it into 20 year bonds, 100 par, 5%
interest on average, she would make $27,336 every 6 months vs. $1,200.
Over the course of those 20 years, she would bring in a bit over 1
million in coupon payments and get her $500,000 back. If she took
25,000 of that first payment and reinvested it in similar bonds, should
make about $1,300 more in interest. That alone covers her $1,200 every
6 months. She could still sit on her butt without a job and make
~$55,000 a year doing absolutely nothing. This is ignoring taxes and
some risks, but you get the idea.

This is the problem with giving poor people money. They don't know what
to do with it and don't think beyond the last 0 on the check (Dems) and
become just as dependent on you as they do on the system when you expect
people to live on what "trickles down" (Repubs).

Sorry for the rant. It's just a hot button for me. The answer for both
side really comes down to "throw money at it" which isn't really an
answer at all.
