Compact isn't compact enough in many ways but that doesn't matter. I can apply a custom style sheet over gmails style sheet which will give me what I want. Remove some of the bothersom borders, shrink some button text, etc.
We're creators and innovators. If something is not to our liking we should just modify it ourselves.
