Actually, I read somewhere that staking the corpses to the ground wasn't 
so much to prevent them from becoming vampires as it was an attempt to 
actually pin them to the ground so they couldn't get up.  Darkly 
amusing.  At least there was *some* rationality behind the practice. 
Actually, the whole vampire thing was completely rational, based on the 
knowledge at the time.
