I know what you mean. These are the people who talk about killing babies
but figure pregnant rape victims are just getting what they deserve.
There's a kind of double think there I haven't been able to come to grips
with. Or, I know an older man whose wife was just diagnosed with
early-stage Alzheimer's. He talks about all the support he is getting set
up through Medicare for the day he may need it, then, without a trace of
irony, rails about social spending. To be clear, I think he is likely to
need the help and should be able to get it. But in his mind it's not social
spending, because social spending is bad.
