Right a mat is the most common way. All of them require something like a
case or adapter to be attached to the phone as well to receive the wireless
power. That's the part I don't want.

I can imagine a (near) future where our lapstops and phones all inductively
charge and the mat is built into your desk / conference room table / etc.
That would be fantastic.
