If you read the narrative below the video, he explains everything. His squad
was doing recon when they were pinned down on the side of the hill. He did what
any squared away infantryman would do in this particular situation, which is
move to draw fire away from the squad so that they can move in on the enemy, or
at lest to a safe position. He knew that he was putting himself in imminent
danger but chose to do it anyway. One soldier is not going to win the fight
normally. It takes the collective whole, so his decision was made in the hopes
that the enemy would divert their attention to him and thus free his squad to
maneuver to a better position. And if you notice, even though he is hit, he has
the presence of mind to retrieve his rifle, which according to him was still
functional (except the M-203 which he said had a nice 7.62 hole in it). As the
soldier said, he eventually made it down the hill on his own. As far as what he
was shooting at, probably at nothing in particular, Just making noise so that
the Taliban would notice him moving and thus divert their attention to him,
which they did.
In the end, the soldier did the right thing. He was doing whatever it takes to
get his squad to a point where they could maneuver to safety. Good for him.
The question may come to mind "well don't you guys train for every scenario"?
While we do train for various scenarios, we are not being shot at with real
bullets during training. The closest we get is the MILES system, which is just
a military version of laser tag. We try to make our training as realistic as
possible without purposely getting someone hurt. However, once the bullets
start flying for real, you have to immediately assess the situation and make
split second decisions.
