Lot's of explanations for Oregon. And as far as the hippie bastards go,
Oregon's government is curiously divided, mostly in a good way. Last
session, one house of congress was split equally and had co-chairs and the
other had the barest of Democratic majorities. They were surprisingly
effective. This term, Democrats regained both houses but things seem pretty
mellow thus far.

The Governor (a Democrat) has managed to steer a middle of the road course
thus far. This upcoming term, he's managing to raise the ire of both the
left and the right by proposing a budget that reigns in the public employee
pension program and reforms mandatory minimum sentences to reduce
corrections costs.

Oregon has problems. I think we are doing a fairly decent job of building a
solid foundation for the future, but it isn't quick and there will
certainly be many missteps.

More importantly, I'm not crowing about producing a budget surplus by
fucking over the poor. We've got problems, but that isn't one of them.
